Site of D-Day Embarkation
In World War II, Castletown Pier, on which Crabbers’ Wharf is built, was heavily involved in the preparations for the D-Day landings, playing a vital role in the assembly and deployment of Allied invasion forces. It is from this location that the 1st and 29th US Infantry Divisions embarked for Omaha Beach. These Divisions were immortalised in the Oscar winning movie, Saving Private Ryan.
The story of Castletown’s involvement in D-Day is told in Castletown D-Day Centre, a museum situated just around the corner from Crabbers’ Wharf.

Mulberry Harbours
One of the most remarkable feats of engineering during World War II was the construction of the temporary, floating Harbours. Today, the last surviving Mulberry Harbours can be seen just offshore from your apartment and accessed via use of our free kayaks and paddleboards, which are included as part of stay at our Portland Habour hotel.
